THE SHAG AFTER THE SHAG (JANE FONDA + ALEXA CHUNG + FELICITY JONES)

The shag is a fairly famous haircut that came to be in the 70’s when Paul McGregor gave it to Jane Fonda for the movie Klute. Not long after that it became wildly popular among musicians like Mick Jagger and actresses like Farrah Fawcett. This haircut was seen on anyone and everyone. If you were keeping up with trends in the 70’s, you were wearing a shag. This haircut has recently come back in fashion in 2017 and is just as popular as it was in 1970. But what about the shag after the shag? Not only does this haircut look amazing immediately after the initial cut, it looks just as cool grown out. This grown out shag celebrities are rocking is THE cut of 2017. It looks effortless and chic while embodying a 70’s rocker all at the same time. The cut is composed of hair that hits just past the shoulders and bangs that are long enough to be parted down the middle and swept away from the face framing it beautifully. This cut has a groovy vibe without fully committing to the serious shag.

If you’re wanting to try this cut out or any cut for that matter, the best example you can bring to your hairstylist is always photos! It might be a bit difficult to explain a “grown out shag” to someone who doesn’t have the same vision as you but a picture is worth a thousand words. With a photo your stylist should be more than capable of achieving what you’re going for. This cut is super versatile and could work on pretty much any hair type. You can also tweak the amount of layers or how long the bangs are to your liking and to suit your hair type best. If your hair tends to look too “poofy” stay away from too many layers and if your hair is curly make sure your bangs are cut a bit longer as they’ll shrink up and be shorter than they are when they’re straight.

Alexa Chung channels the 70’s through her style and her hair
Felicity Jones pairs her shag with heavier, shorter bangs and some added layers for volume
This style is a great option for an in between cut. When you’re growing your hair out from having a shorter look and bangs and they’re getting a little longer. Or a good look if you want an low maintenance on trend look.

SATIN SLEEK (GWENYTH PALTROW + SELENA GOMEZ + KYLIE JENNER)

2017 has been all about tousled loose beach waves, but let’s take a break from that and try something a little more…sleek. Straight, sleek hair parted down the middle has been a rising trend this year being seen on runways and red carpets alike. This style pairs excellently with feminine dresses like seen below on Gwenyth Paltrow for an all over lady like look. Also with classic outfits like Selena Gomez who paired it with a timeless black turtleneck. It can also simplify an extravagant dress like seen on Kylie Jenner in the photo below. Whether you’re wearing this style on a short bob or longer locks you’ll look elegant either way. This look isn’t hard to achieve but it has to be done the right way for the full effect. Keep reading to see how.

Gwenyth Paltrow has been rocking this look since the 90’s.

Selena Gomez pairs her straight locks with a dark lip and sweater for a vampy look.

Kylie Jenner is a perfect example of how you can still wear this look with short hair
Your hair has to be absolutely pin straight in order to perfect this look so here’s how to get it there. If you have curly or frizzy hair you’ll want to make sure to use a smoothing shampoo to start taming your hair from the get go. If your hair is naturally straight try a shampoo with some ingredients that’ll add a bit of shine. First off, part your wet hair straight down the middle using a comb to make your part as precise as possible. Apply an oil or serum onto wet hair to ensure the glossiest finish. The best thing to do next is blow dry your hair to seal the cuticle. Sealing the cuticle of the hair using heat makes for the smoothest look. Use a ceramic round brush and make sure to apply heat protectant prior to blow drying. Blow dry the hair as straight as possible and follow up with a flat iron to ensure the strands are stick straight. If your ends have any type of bend you’ll want to make sure they end up perfectly straight. After all these steps are done run a finishing oil or spray through the ends of the hair avoiding the roots so they don’t end up looking greasy. Don’t be afraid to use high shine products for this look as the glossy finish is key.

SILVER? GOLD? PLATINUM! (MARYLIN MONROE + LINDA EVANGELISTA + BLONDIE)

Lately it really does seem like blondes have more fun, and not just blonde…platinum blonde. Light hair has been all the rage lately, all of your favorite celebrities have been heading to the salon for that icy look. However, this trend isn’t a new one starlets have been sporting this silvery style since the 50’s. Marylin Monroe, originally a brunette picked up a bottle of peroxide before her first screen test and not long after that, her platinum blonde curls became her signature. Her stage name says it all, Blondie was well known for her bright locks although Debbie Harry was born a brunette. Super model Linda Evangelista took the plunge in the 90‘s trading her natural deep brunette mane for something about ten shades lighter. Making the leap from dark brow hair to blonde seems to be a crucial career move for a number of celebrities giving them that little bit of extra “oomph” that takes them to the next level.

Side by side of Marylin Monroe before and after she made her iconic switch to platinum.

After Linda Evangelista went platinum she wouldn’t get out of bed for less than
$10,000 a day. Don’t you want to go blonde after hearing that?

BLONDIE…enough said.
With all that being said, you’re probably dialing your hairstylists number to book your blonde appointment. Slow down Marylin and lets talk maintenance. Platinum is a stand out color and can be achieved by pretty much anyone but not overnight. There’s only one way to achieve this hue and that’s bleach, lots of bleach. Don’t expect for your transformation to take place right away, the darker your hair the longer the process. In order to keep the integrity of your hair in tact your stylist should lighten your hair in sessions. Gradually lightening the hair will keep it healthy and in the best condition possible. This is a high upkeep style as you won’t want dark roots contrasting against the light blonde shade (and if you do that’s a different style and blog post entirely). You’ll need to have a root touch up every couple of weeks depending on how fast your hair grows. Use a nourishing shampoo and conditioner throwing in a deep conditioning treatment once or twice a week to keep your locks silky smooth.
Well…what are you waiting for? Always wanted to be a blonde? There’s no better time than the present! Make the change and find out if blondes really do have more fun!

It’s Wedding Season…(almost)! (KIM KARDASHIAN + HILARY DUFF)

September is just around the corner which means it’s almost peak wedding season! September is the one of the most popular month for weddings so you better start planning! Let’s talk hair. A wedding style should be long lasting, comfortable, and beautiful, of course. There are so many different directions you could go with wedding hair styles so let’s touch on some of them.
CLASSIC UPDO’s
Classic and simple updo’s are always a great choice for weddings. These styles are timeless and will stand the test of time when you look back at photos from your special day. Another plus about these do’s is that they will last you all night and you won’t get hot while dancing the night away! A bouffant style bun pictured below on Hillary Duff on her wedding day showcases how elegant these simple looks can be. You don’t have to worry about your curls falling or hair being out of place, these looks are truly one and done. They also pair wonderfully with extravagant dresses or gowns with detail on the back so you get the full effect.

SLEEK & DOWN
If you still want something simple and easy to wear but aren’t a fan of your hair being up try a wearing your hair down with the front pieces slicked or pinned back. This way your hair is out of your face but you can have the rest of your locks flowing freely. With this style you have the option of wearing the hair that is left down wavy or more on the straight side like this photo of Kim Kardashian on her wedding day below. Kim opts for a middle part with the hair around her face pinned back, leaving the rest of her hair down with a slight bend to it for some added texture. You won’t be brushing your bangs out of your face and it’ll show off your glamorous wedding day makeup. Pair this look with an off the shoulder gown and let your hair cascade over your shoulders.

TRENDY BOHO
Beach waves and pulled out messy braids have been very on trend these past few years and can be a gorgeous addition to any wedding. Whether your wedding is actually on the beach or you just want to bring a little bit of paradise to your special day. These looks are dressy yet casual. Combining the waves with pulled out braids makes this style look put together while still being effortless and undone. Try something like these looks below for your special day. Start with beachy waves and add a traditional or waterfall braid around your crown, pull pieces out for a messy look and to make it even more unique add some flowers or gem hair accessories for sparkle.

Hair Cutting: Dry vs. Wet (John Sahag + John Francis + Demi Moore)

When you get your hair done, does your hair stylist cut your hair wet or dry? The most common answer now a days is wet. However, dry hair cutting is a revolutionary way of cutting hair! The technique was coined by John Sahag, who was known as the first internationally-recognized freelance hairstylist. He performed his hair magic on celebrities from Gweneth Paltrow and Brad Pitt to Jennifer Anniston and Mick Jagger! Sahag is famous for giving Demi Moore her signature “boy cut” in the film “The Ghost”.

Dry cutting the hair involves cutting the hair in a series of layers before washing and coloring, to ensure a precise and even cut. It allows both the hair stylist and the client to see that shape of the hair as it forms through the cut, rather than waiting for the big reveal after the wash and blow dry! If you have ever experience a drastic change at the salon, you can imagine that this might be a good way to go.
When you hair is wet, it does not show its true length or volume, so cutting dry really gives your hair the benefit of the doubt. Your stylist is able to see every cowlick, curl, wave, and uneven length you have going on. When you hair is wet, it is almost impossible to see all of those imperfections.

Our very own John Francis has been cutting hair dry, just like John Sahag for over 10 years! He has been praised for his dry-cutting techniques and has been lovingly compared to Sahag over and over again. John Francis travels from celebrity client to client performing his dry-cutting, hair magic, just like Sahag once did! It is uncommon to find a hair stylist who cuts hair dry, but the advantages of cutting hair dry in comparison to wet are huge! If you have never had your hair cut dry, we encourage you to give it a go, drop into the salon for a consultation!

This hairstyle is so simple and easy to do, but it looks like you spent a ton of time! Simply take a section of hair from each side of your head and twist it back, securing with a hair elastic. You can wrap a piece of hair from the ponytail around the elastic, just like the photo, if you would like! This would be gorgeous paired with a dress or casual with your bikini and some shorts!

Half-Up Bun
The half-up bun is always a great option for day or night! It can be worn during the day to keep your hair out of your face as you lounge on the beach, or as a trendy hair style for night time with your favorite dress at dinner! Our favorite gal Shay Mitchell pulls of this look flawlessly with her natural waves, which is what vacation hair is all about!

Faux Corn Rows
We have seen celebrities rocking the cornrows left and right these days, but it really is a great, and practical vacation look! There is no need to head to the salon for this look, when you can get the look at home! Simply part your hair in the center and create two skinny, cornrows going straight back! Let your natural waves do their thing, and you are all set! Hallie Steinfeld is rocking this look!

Messy Bun + Braids
This look is on that, when you are on vacation, you can pull off wearing during the day or at night! It might look intimidating, but it is actually super easy to do! Simply make two braids starting at the top of your head and gather all of your hair into a low, messy bun! This is sort of a messy, beach version of an up-do for night time! We are obsessed!

Classic French Braids
French braids are a vacation hair staple! If you don’t know how to do them to your own hair, the chances are, someone in your crew can help you out. These braids keep your hair out of your face and protected from tangles and chlorine! Plus, how adorable are they!?

How Often Should You Wash, Deep Condition, and Trim to Keep Your Hair Healthy? (Jessica Alba + Mila Kunis)

There are thousands of opinions floating around out there about how often you trim, wash, condition, etc, and we are here to set the record straight today! Whether you are trying to grow out your mermaid locks, or maintain your cut, we have tips for you so you can always look your best.
WASH
When it comes to washing your hair, there are lots of different opinions out there. Some people wash their hair everyday, and others only wash their hair a few times a week. If you have been reading our blog for a while, then you know that we recommend only washing your hair when necessary. It is totally healthy to let your hair nourish itself in its natural oils. When you wash your hair with the harsh chemicals of shampoo, your hair is stripped of its natural oils and forced to over-produce, which creates an imbalance in your hair. You might actually be making your hair more oily by washing it more! Try washing your hair every other day to start! It will train your hair to produce less oil, and after a while you might be able to go two days without washing your mane. Of course, if you work out, or you actually need to wash your hair, then go for it girl, and enjoy that shower! However, otherwise, make that dry shampoo your best friend! Bonus-hairstyles hold better when your hair is a bit dirty!
DEEP CONDITION
We recommend deep conditioning at least once a week! Deep conditioning your hair is something that you can do inside or outside of the shower. It really depends on your preference! If you are going to be home all day, or cleaning for a few hours, throw some deep conditioner in your damp hair and put it in a bun to soak up some extra moisture. Deep conditioning your hair is especially important to do after you have spent a long time in the sun, or you have colored your hair lighter. Trust us, your hair will thank you for the extra moisture!

TRIM
When to get a trim is possibly the most controversial out of our three topics today. People who are trying to grow their hair out usually do not want to trim their hair with the fear that they will loose to much length. However, if you let your hair grow too long that it develops too much breakage, more hair will end up being cut off to leave you with healthy hair and you will end up going backwards in your growth progress. With that being said, If you want to grow out your hair, we recommend getting a trim every three months at the longest to ensure that you do not get too much breakage. If you are trying to maintain your haircut, we recommend getting a trim every 4-6 weeks.

Weekend Refresh: Healthy Locks Before, During, and After the Good Times (Selena Gomez + Miley Cyrus)

Whether you just spent a weekend in the sun, or you a weekend full of events that required heat styling, your hair might need a bit of a break! It is always good to treat yo’ self to some nice hair treatments and care after a long weekend of fun to make sure your locks are ready for the next time you put them through the ringer! As we step into Spring and Summer it is officially party time, so we thought we would share our hair care tips for keeping your hair healthy pre and post fun weekend events!
PREP
If possible, the week leading up to your weekend plans, try not to over wash your hair! Let it get nice and dirty and rock the messy bun. This is actually super good for your hair to nourish itself in its natural oils When you finally do wash your hair it will feel so good and extra silky and healthy! If you are going to be applying heat over your weekend or any sort of crazy color you want to be sure that your hair is extra moisturized, especially if you will be in the sun! Applying some coconut oil from your ears down and throwing your hair up in bun for a few hours before your final wash will help give your ends a boost of moisture!

DURING
f the weather is nice, your event will most likely take place outside in the sun at this time of year! Don’t forget that your scalp and hair get effected by the sun just like your skin. Putting sunscreen on your part in your hair and drinking tons of water throughout the day if you are at a music festival can save your hair from the sun damage. Trust us, you do not want a sunburned scalp!
AFTER
Time to refresh your hair! Before you hop in the shower, if possible, try and brush through your hair while it is dry to comb through excess product. When in the shower, let your conditioner sit in your hair for a few minutes, and then comb it through with a wide tooth comb. This will make the after-shower process so much easier! In the days after your weekend, be sure to apply a deep conditioning treatment to your hair once or twice to restore it’s moisture and don’t be afraid to let your hair get dirty and have it nourish itself in its natural oils! I mean don’t we all want our hair too look as healthy as Selena Gomez’s in her Pantene ad?
