THE BIG BANG (JUNO TEMPLE + SIENNA MILLER + ZOOEY DESCHANEL)

With the new year approaching you might be starting to feel a bit drab and dull, like you need a change. What better way to put a little pep in your step than with a new hair style? If you’re really feeling like stepping into the new year with a new look, I have one word for you…bangs. Bangs can totally transform your current style into a new one and give you an entirely new look. Now, don’t think you have to go full Bettie Paige, there are many different types of bangs so keep reading to see which is the best fit for you.
If you have curly hair you might have gone your whole life thinking you don’t have the right hair type for bangs. News flash…there is no right hair type for bangs. No matter what texture of your hair there is a fringe for you. Instead of trying to straighten your bangs, embrace your natural texture and wear them curly! Juno Temple has been rocking curly bangs in her new TV series which is set in the 70’s. We have talked previously about how in the revival of the 70’s is right now so this look is right on trend. Simply add some curl cream to your damp hair and blow dry with a diffuser for soft and defined curls.

Next lets talk about bangs where you don’t have to fully commit. If you’re not ready to make the drastic cut try these curtain bangs, pictured on Sienna Miller below. There is just enough bang to change your look but not too much where you can’t style your hair differently. This style of bang is extremely versatile and can be worn straight across or side swept. If you’re not feeling your bangs or don’t have time to style them you can easily push them to the side or pin them back.

Now it’s time for the real deal. I’m talking the straight across blunt bang. Not many people are brave enough to make the cut. These bangs typically need to be styled every day to keep them looking clean and fresh. It’s best to style these type of bangs with a round brush so you get a little volume and they aren’t sitting flat on your forehead. Dry shampoo is a must with this hairstyle, stash some in your bag for a quick way to freshen up on the go.

THE REVISED BOB (JANUARY JONES + CIARA + DAKOTA JOHNSON)

Last time we talked we spoke about the Blunt Bob, a big hair trend in 2017. What’s possibly an even bigger trend this year? The modern bob, or better known as the long bob- the lob. As the name suggests, this cut is the longer version of the classic bob. Typically this cut hits right at the shoulders or below with little to no layers. It’s universally flattering and not really a traditional “short haircut” which makes it super versatile. Because it’s not very short you are still able to pull your hair out of your face into a ponytail or bun. Since there are little or no layers you’ll have a clean looking pony or bun with no pieces sticking out. If your hair is feeling heavy or like it’s too thick with the shorter cut, you can always opt for layers in your lob and make it choppier.

January Jones styles her lob with some choppy layers
While we’ve been talking about cuts so much let’s get into color for a minute. A lob works with virtually any hair color. If your hair is a singular color and you’re feeling like your hair is looking a little bland without layers try adding some light. Highlights or a balayage are the way to go. This adds movement and texture to the hair breaking it up and making it look more interesting and on trend. If you do opt for some layers highlights can really accentuate them and bring the whole style together. Adding lightness to the hair makes it look less graphic so it really depends what kind of look you’re going for.

In this photo Ciara showcases how adding lightness to the lob can really transform the look
As with the previously talked about classic bob, any hair texture will work with this cut. If you have curly or wavy hair stay away from too many layers as it can make the cut look out of control and unruly. The goal with this cut is to make it look effortless and chic so less is more.

THE BLUNT BOB (RIHANNA + JAIME KING + RITA ORA)

Let’s talk cuts! The bob has been a popular haircut since flappers in the 1920’s started sporting it. The 20’s bob was much shorter than the modern day cut we see everyone wearing today. In the 1920’s it was often worn often worn with a side-parting, curled or waved, and with the hair at the nape of the neck  Fast forward to the 60’s where Vidal Sassoon simplified the cut and it became popular again and has been ever since. Editor- in- chief of Vogue Anna Wintour has had a bob since 1988 and in 1994 Uma Thurman’s character Mia Wallace made it an iconic cut in the cult classic Pulp Fiction. Since then the bob has continued to evolve while staying present in trends throughout the years.
In 2017 it’s all about being blunt…with your hair of course! The newest and most on trend way to wear a bob current day is cut sharp and angular. The cut should be very precise and exact. Curly haired girls, don’t fret, you can pull off the blunt bob too. Check out the photo of Rihanna rocking it below embracing her natural texture.

Jaime King combines the blunt bob trend and the satin sleek trend we discussed in a previous post
Combining the satin sleek trend with this one compliments the cut perfectly. With the right cut this style will showcase the precision and sharpness of this style. Check out our “Satin Sleek” blogpost to see how to achieve this look and wear two trends in one hairstyle.

Keep it old school and wear this cut like the flappers did in the 20’s. In this photo above of Rita Ora she has her bob cut a little higher than chin length and has it parted to the side. This is great for fine or thin hair as it creates the appearance of volume and makes the hair look fuller. This style could be worn with straight or curly hair and would compliment both textures.

THE SHAG AFTER THE SHAG (JANE FONDA + ALEXA CHUNG + FELICITY JONES)

The shag is a fairly famous haircut that came to be in the 70’s when Paul McGregor gave it to Jane Fonda for the movie Klute. Not long after that it became wildly popular among musicians like Mick Jagger and actresses like Farrah Fawcett. This haircut was seen on anyone and everyone. If you were keeping up with trends in the 70’s, you were wearing a shag. This haircut has recently come back in fashion in 2017 and is just as popular as it was in 1970. But what about the shag after the shag? Not only does this haircut look amazing immediately after the initial cut, it looks just as cool grown out. This grown out shag celebrities are rocking is THE cut of 2017. It looks effortless and chic while embodying a 70’s rocker all at the same time. The cut is composed of hair that hits just past the shoulders and bangs that are long enough to be parted down the middle and swept away from the face framing it beautifully. This cut has a groovy vibe without fully committing to the serious shag.

If you’re wanting to try this cut out or any cut for that matter, the best example you can bring to your hairstylist is always photos! It might be a bit difficult to explain a “grown out shag” to someone who doesn’t have the same vision as you but a picture is worth a thousand words. With a photo your stylist should be more than capable of achieving what you’re going for. This cut is super versatile and could work on pretty much any hair type. You can also tweak the amount of layers or how long the bangs are to your liking and to suit your hair type best. If your hair tends to look too “poofy” stay away from too many layers and if your hair is curly make sure your bangs are cut a bit longer as they’ll shrink up and be shorter than they are when they’re straight.

Alexa Chung channels the 70’s through her style and her hair
Felicity Jones pairs her shag with heavier, shorter bangs and some added layers for volume
This style is a great option for an in between cut. When you’re growing your hair out from having a shorter look and bangs and they’re getting a little longer. Or a good look if you want an low maintenance on trend look.

Hair Cutting: Dry vs. Wet (John Sahag + John Francis + Demi Moore)

When you get your hair done, does your hair stylist cut your hair wet or dry? The most common answer now a days is wet. However, dry hair cutting is a revolutionary way of cutting hair! The technique was coined by John Sahag, who was known as the first internationally-recognized freelance hairstylist. He performed his hair magic on celebrities from Gweneth Paltrow and Brad Pitt to Jennifer Anniston and Mick Jagger! Sahag is famous for giving Demi Moore her signature “boy cut” in the film “The Ghost”.

Dry cutting the hair involves cutting the hair in a series of layers before washing and coloring, to ensure a precise and even cut. It allows both the hair stylist and the client to see that shape of the hair as it forms through the cut, rather than waiting for the big reveal after the wash and blow dry! If you have ever experience a drastic change at the salon, you can imagine that this might be a good way to go.
When you hair is wet, it does not show its true length or volume, so cutting dry really gives your hair the benefit of the doubt. Your stylist is able to see every cowlick, curl, wave, and uneven length you have going on. When you hair is wet, it is almost impossible to see all of those imperfections.

Our very own John Francis has been cutting hair dry, just like John Sahag for over 10 years! He has been praised for his dry-cutting techniques and has been lovingly compared to Sahag over and over again. John Francis travels from celebrity client to client performing his dry-cutting, hair magic, just like Sahag once did! It is uncommon to find a hair stylist who cuts hair dry, but the advantages of cutting hair dry in comparison to wet are huge! If you have never had your hair cut dry, we encourage you to give it a go, drop into the salon for a consultation!

How Often Should You Wash, Deep Condition, and Trim to Keep Your Hair Healthy? (Jessica Alba + Mila Kunis)

There are thousands of opinions floating around out there about how often you trim, wash, condition, etc, and we are here to set the record straight today! Whether you are trying to grow out your mermaid locks, or maintain your cut, we have tips for you so you can always look your best.
WASH
When it comes to washing your hair, there are lots of different opinions out there. Some people wash their hair everyday, and others only wash their hair a few times a week. If you have been reading our blog for a while, then you know that we recommend only washing your hair when necessary. It is totally healthy to let your hair nourish itself in its natural oils. When you wash your hair with the harsh chemicals of shampoo, your hair is stripped of its natural oils and forced to over-produce, which creates an imbalance in your hair. You might actually be making your hair more oily by washing it more! Try washing your hair every other day to start! It will train your hair to produce less oil, and after a while you might be able to go two days without washing your mane. Of course, if you work out, or you actually need to wash your hair, then go for it girl, and enjoy that shower! However, otherwise, make that dry shampoo your best friend! Bonus-hairstyles hold better when your hair is a bit dirty!
DEEP CONDITION
We recommend deep conditioning at least once a week! Deep conditioning your hair is something that you can do inside or outside of the shower. It really depends on your preference! If you are going to be home all day, or cleaning for a few hours, throw some deep conditioner in your damp hair and put it in a bun to soak up some extra moisture. Deep conditioning your hair is especially important to do after you have spent a long time in the sun, or you have colored your hair lighter. Trust us, your hair will thank you for the extra moisture!

TRIM
When to get a trim is possibly the most controversial out of our three topics today. People who are trying to grow their hair out usually do not want to trim their hair with the fear that they will loose to much length. However, if you let your hair grow too long that it develops too much breakage, more hair will end up being cut off to leave you with healthy hair and you will end up going backwards in your growth progress. With that being said, If you want to grow out your hair, we recommend getting a trim every three months at the longest to ensure that you do not get too much breakage. If you are trying to maintain your haircut, we recommend getting a trim every 4-6 weeks.

Layer Short and Long, We Love Them All!

Layers are an amazing way to spice up your look and add some movement to your hair. You can go dramatic with your layers and create an entirely new vibe with your hair or simply freshen up your style by adding some body to your hair. The choice is yours, but both are great options-especially for the Spring time!

Lighten Your Load

Spring is all about that light, airy, fresh feeling, so why not give your hair the same feeling? A short, choppy, layered look is perfect for a new beginning and a chance to step out of your comfort zone. Plus, your hair will feel light as a feather and out of your face when the weather warms up. We love this look on celebrity Jenna Elfman. She looks chic and sophisticated but still playful!

Freshen Up Your Tresses

Adding layers to your long hair is a great way to freshen up your look for the Spring. Having long hair that is all one length can be heavy and start to look dull if it is not kept freshly trimmed. So add some long, subtle layers to your look and you will feel lighter and look fresh without having to make a drastic change. Selena Gomez pulls off the long, layered look flawlessly and we are obsessed!

Frame That Face

Face-framing layers are an excellent option for hair that needs a bit of life. This style can add more dimension to your hair and make your hair style really suit your face shape. At the salon, simply ask for face-framing layers and they will give you a cut that is best suited for your hair type and face shape. This style is super easy to style and it gives your hair amazing body. We are huge fans of this look and are forever in love with Jennifer Aniston’s layers!
Freshen up your hair with some layers and you will be ready to look fabulous for Spring. Call us to book an appointment. Remember to follow us on Instagram @johnfrancisbeauty and on Twitter @jfrancisbeauty!
