How Often Should You Wash, Deep Condition, and Trim to Keep Your Hair Healthy? (Jessica Alba + Mila Kunis)

There are thousands of opinions floating around out there about how often you trim, wash, condition, etc, and we are here to set the record straight today! Whether you are trying to grow out your mermaid locks, or maintain your cut, we have tips for you so you can always look your best.
WASH
When it comes to washing your hair, there are lots of different opinions out there. Some people wash their hair everyday, and others only wash their hair a few times a week. If you have been reading our blog for a while, then you know that we recommend only washing your hair when necessary. It is totally healthy to let your hair nourish itself in its natural oils. When you wash your hair with the harsh chemicals of shampoo, your hair is stripped of its natural oils and forced to over-produce, which creates an imbalance in your hair. You might actually be making your hair more oily by washing it more! Try washing your hair every other day to start! It will train your hair to produce less oil, and after a while you might be able to go two days without washing your mane. Of course, if you work out, or you actually need to wash your hair, then go for it girl, and enjoy that shower! However, otherwise, make that dry shampoo your best friend! Bonus-hairstyles hold better when your hair is a bit dirty!
DEEP CONDITION
We recommend deep conditioning at least once a week! Deep conditioning your hair is something that you can do inside or outside of the shower. It really depends on your preference! If you are going to be home all day, or cleaning for a few hours, throw some deep conditioner in your damp hair and put it in a bun to soak up some extra moisture. Deep conditioning your hair is especially important to do after you have spent a long time in the sun, or you have colored your hair lighter. Trust us, your hair will thank you for the extra moisture!

TRIM
When to get a trim is possibly the most controversial out of our three topics today. People who are trying to grow their hair out usually do not want to trim their hair with the fear that they will loose to much length. However, if you let your hair grow too long that it develops too much breakage, more hair will end up being cut off to leave you with healthy hair and you will end up going backwards in your growth progress. With that being said, If you want to grow out your hair, we recommend getting a trim every three months at the longest to ensure that you do not get too much breakage. If you are trying to maintain your haircut, we recommend getting a trim every 4-6 weeks.

Weekend Refresh: Healthy Locks Before, During, and After the Good Times (Selena Gomez + Miley Cyrus)

Whether you just spent a weekend in the sun, or you a weekend full of events that required heat styling, your hair might need a bit of a break! It is always good to treat yo’ self to some nice hair treatments and care after a long weekend of fun to make sure your locks are ready for the next time you put them through the ringer! As we step into Spring and Summer it is officially party time, so we thought we would share our hair care tips for keeping your hair healthy pre and post fun weekend events!
PREP
If possible, the week leading up to your weekend plans, try not to over wash your hair! Let it get nice and dirty and rock the messy bun. This is actually super good for your hair to nourish itself in its natural oils When you finally do wash your hair it will feel so good and extra silky and healthy! If you are going to be applying heat over your weekend or any sort of crazy color you want to be sure that your hair is extra moisturized, especially if you will be in the sun! Applying some coconut oil from your ears down and throwing your hair up in bun for a few hours before your final wash will help give your ends a boost of moisture!

DURING
f the weather is nice, your event will most likely take place outside in the sun at this time of year! Don’t forget that your scalp and hair get effected by the sun just like your skin. Putting sunscreen on your part in your hair and drinking tons of water throughout the day if you are at a music festival can save your hair from the sun damage. Trust us, you do not want a sunburned scalp!
AFTER
Time to refresh your hair! Before you hop in the shower, if possible, try and brush through your hair while it is dry to comb through excess product. When in the shower, let your conditioner sit in your hair for a few minutes, and then comb it through with a wide tooth comb. This will make the after-shower process so much easier! In the days after your weekend, be sure to apply a deep conditioning treatment to your hair once or twice to restore it’s moisture and don’t be afraid to let your hair get dirty and have it nourish itself in its natural oils! I mean don’t we all want our hair too look as healthy as Selena Gomez’s in her Pantene ad?

OLAPLEX: Condition Your Hair Like the Kardashians

The Kardashians are famous for having beautiful, luscious, healthy-looking hair. Of course these ladies have a team of beauty gurus behind them daily who make the look fabulous, but there is one product that this famous family uses on their hair that you too can get your hands on! We all know Kim and Kylie go from dark to light pretty much over night, which is usually impossible without making your hair fall out. However, these ladies’ stylists use Olaplex, a product which rebuilds the bonds in hair which are damaged by color. This allows for healthy hair even when making drastic color changes!
Now the fear of going dark to light in a drastic way can go away! Olaplex creates a revolutionary way of coloring hair in a non-damaging way. When Kim Kardashian went blonde the first time, her hair looked so healthy and almost like a wig. She had people thinking that there was absolutely no way she could have gone blonde that quickly from the deep brown she was before.

Kylie Jenner decided to go blonde as a surprise for her 18th birthday party. Man was that a surprise! The teen went from black hair to a platinum blonde in one day and her hair looks perfectly healthy! For the amount of processing her hair went through it should have fallen out, but her stylist used Olaplaex, and it saved her hair!

Hair care and color is always evolving! Be sure to ask your stylist if Olaplaex is available for you to use the next time you go in for a color change! Trust us, your hair will thank you!

The Lowdown on Keratin Treatments

Keratin treatments are a major topic of conversation in the hair world at the moment, and we want to give you all the details. Summer is fast approaching and people are wanting to transform their look and battle frizz, so many are turning to smoothing treatments such as keratin.
So, we are coming to you today with the low-down on the best alternatives to keratin treatments, how long they will last, and most important — are keratin treatments actually damaging to your hair? Let’s dive in to this hot topic and find out.

Keratin Alternatives

Let’s face it…we all want smooth, beautiful hair at some point in our lives. Keratin treatments are definitely the most popular an well-know route for achieving this look, but there are actually quite a few alternatives that can give you the same result with less chemicals. Whether you are looking for an in-home treatments or you want to head to a salon, there are options for you. If you want your favorite hair stylist to give you a treatment, brands like Pravana and Uberliss have smoothing systems that are made with little to no harmful chemicals and mostly natural ingredients. If you want to give your self an at-home treatment, give Aveda’s smoothing system a try. The brand is known for being gentle and natural.

How Long Does it Really Last?

We know you want to get the most longevity out of your treatment, and finding answers to your questions might be hard to get. So, here is the truth. Traditional, salon Keratin treatments can last up to two and a half months. Limiting the use of heat styling and products containing oils and harsh chemicals can definitely keep your hair looking healthier and smoother, but when your hair’s natural texture starts to grow back, you will need to head back to the salon for another keratin treatment.

Are Keratin Treatments Damaging to Your Hair?

The big question we all have is…Will a keratin treatment damage my hair? This is honestly different for every person, but the short answer is YES. The reason it is different for every person is because it really depends on the condition of the person’s hair going into the treatment. A keratin treatment contains harsh chemicals, so whether your hair is super healthy or very brittle, going into the treatment, your hair will become some sort of damaged. If you use lots of heat styling on your hair after getting a keratin treatment, your hair will definitely become more brittle and can become very weak over time. Repeated keratin treatments can even cause your hair to start to break off, which is what Jennifer Anniston claimed as the reason for her chopping her hair into a long bob. All of that said, it is up to you and your best judgement about the health of your hair.

Alcohol-Free for Hydrated, Healthy Hair: Gigi Hadid

Alcohol is an ingredient that is found in almost every beauty product. You probably didn’t know that any type of alcohol can actually cause heavy damage to your hair. We have compiled a list of go-to hair styling alcohol-free products that will help you prevent any hair damage this summer, as well as keep it hydrated and healthy. Who doesn’t want shiny & healthy hair like Gigi Hadid?

What does alcohol do to your hair?

The types of alcohol used in most hair products are known for being very drying and harmful to your hair. Alcohol is a very harsh chemical, and is not something that should be used when you are trying to treat your hair gently and with care. Alcohol in your hair products can cause dryness, dandruff, scalp rashes, and allergic reactions. The chemicals also strip your hair of its natural oils, which leaves your hair dry, brittle, and dull. Now, we don’t want any of that, do we ladies?

Alcohol-Free Products You Will Love!

There are tons of alcohol-free hair products out there. Drugstores carry great options if you are looking for an at-home styling option. A few great alcohol-free product lines are Carol’s Daughter, Garner Fructis, and Loreal. Each of these lines have specific alcohol-free products that will suit your preference, they range from shampoo and conditioners to firm-hold hairsprays.
There are also some salon quality ranges that are alcohol-free as well, if you are looking to have your hair done by a professional. These lines include Pureology, Biosilk, and Oscar Blandi.
Overloading your hair with products filled with alcohol will make it very difficult to keep your hair hydrated and healthy, especially with summer approaching. If you want to keep your hair healthy this summer we definitely recommend doing your research when you are buying new hair products. It will definitely be worth taking the extra time on research, not only will you not harm your hair, it will leave your hair looking healthy and shiny. Trust us- your hair will thank you. Cheers to a healthy, easy to manage hair for the summer time!
We hope you enjoyed this post. If you have any favorite alcohol-free products you love, then share it with us! Tweet us @jfrancisbeauty and tag us on Instagram @johnfrancisbeauty!

Hydrated, Gorgeous Hair Like Selena Gomez

Summer is approaching, which means nothing but sun, sand, and saltwater. Taking care of your hair in the warmer months is essential to being able to have silky, hydrated hair in the cooler months of the year just like Selena Gomez. We know you love a good beach day lounging in the sun and cooling off in the ocean, so here are some ways to take care of your locks while having fun in the sun and salt this summer!

First step to hydrated, summer hair like Selena is to get rid of the alcohol. Now, before you freak out- NO we do not mean the type your drink. Feel free to have that margarita on the beach girl. We are talking about the drying, chemical filled alcohol that is in so many hair products. Alcohol can be extremely damaging to your hair, especially in the summer months when your hair is usually a bit more dry from the sun and saltwater. Alcohol-free products are not actually that hard to find, and you hair will thank you for using them. Don’t worry, we will show you exactly which products to use in our next post. Stay tuned!

2. Rinse out that Salt (+ Chlorine)

Who hasn’t spent the entire day at the beach or the pool and waited until they got home to wash their hair. Everybody, right?! Well, taking an extra few minutes before your leave the water location you were in can really save your hair from extra damage. Both saltwater and chlorine are extremely drying to your hair and the longer they sit in your hair, the more damage they can cause. The next time you leave the beach or the pool try rinsing your hair out with bottled water. The minerals from the bottled water will help re-hydrate your hair so the next time you wash and blow-dry your hair, it will look healthy, sexy, and soft- just like our girl Selena.

3. Hydrate that Hair

During the summer it is important that you hydrate your hair inside and out. Be sure to drink TONS of water, especially if you are going to be in the sun all day. Another great way to hydrate your hair after putting it through hours in the sun is to have a girl’s night, put on some face masks, and soak your hair in coconut oil. Leave the coconut oil on as long as you can (you can even wear it overnight), give your hair a nice wash, and trust us- you will feel a difference in your hair.
We hope you enjoyed this post. We have lots of fun summer hair tips coming soon, so be sure to check back soon and follow us on our social media outlets.

Keratin Containing Formaldehyde?!

Keratin products containing formaldehyde is a hot topic in the beauty world these days, so we thought we would give our two cents. Most of us are not aware that our beauty products can contain formaldehyde, which is a gas that is released when the keratin formula is mixed with heat and water. Is this safe? Are there safe options out there for keratin treatments? Let’s dive in and find out!

What does formaldehyde do to your hair?

In most cases of keratin treatments, the formaldehyde is the ingredient that actually smooths the hair. When the keratin is mixed with heat and water, if actually breaks the bond of the hair, making it much more relaxed. However, while the ingredient may be effective, it is not the safest thing to be inhaling. Formaldehyde is colorless, but strong-smelling and can cause major health issues when inhaled, when it comes in contact with the eyes, or when it is absorbed through the skin. It can cause irritation to the body and trigger a sever allergic reaction of the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. It has also been said customers who repeatedly get keratin treatments that contain formaldehyde are at a much greater risk of cancer. So, it can be risky to come in contact with formaldehyde. Perhaps there is a safer alternative that gives the same results for your hair?

Are there formaldehyde-free options?

Formaldehyde-free options do indeed exist, but it can be extremely tricky to distinguish between the two. Most brands claim to be formaldehyde-free, but after experts closely read the ingredients, they find that the products still contain formaldehyde-releasing agents. The gamble with using a formaldehyde-free product is that is still contains tons of other harmful chemicals, and may not work as well as the leading product that does contain formaldehyde.
This decision can be tricky. Be sure to talk to your hair stylist about your options when it comes to keratin treatments and how you can smooth your hair in the safest way possible.
